benbrown's Essays on Go, Team Internet!
An important question for all Go Teamers!
Hey guys, So, I just received a $100 check for the ads that run on GTI, and I thought I would REINVEST in the site! I would really like to update the site to the latest version of PeoplePods, which is basically the open source version of the GTI code. This would give me better admin tools, and make it easier for me to make updates and add new features. You can see the latest version of PeoplePods in action here: http://core.peoplepods.net So the question becomes: A) Do you want me to upgrade? B) If I do upgrade, would you be terribly upset if your old content did not transition over? C) Even if we kept the old site around in an archived format? The choice is yours!I just bought 14 boxes of varying smallnesses.
Today I went to Japantown and did some small box shopping.
I have a weird assortment of smallish things that I need to pack up and take with me to Texas. For example, I found out that I had somehow purchased literally 12 packages of small rubber squid toys, 2 squids per package. I believe my thinking was, "when will I ever get another chance to buy small rubber squid toys? I had better buy a lot now!" Also, I have the world's largest collection of 1-inch pins, seemingly several of them in the back pocket of every pair of pants I own. I do not wear 1-inch pins, but somehow I collect them in my pants. Also, Animal Crossing zipper pulls.
All of my other small boxes have already been filled and filed away into other, slightly larger boxes, but I still had more stuff. More boxes were necessary.
Here is what I purchased:
4 x interlocking small toy boxes / display cases. for small toys.
2 x large toy box / display case. for slightly larger toys.
4 x tiny tupperware-type boxes. for stickers and pins and also for all those random little extra pieces that come with toys now. also, those damned foreign coins that keep showing up in the change jar! and any unused but keepable keychains. everything must have its place!
4 x cardboard "comic book" boxes for anime-sized books. These will contain notebooks and smallish files of 3x5 cards, and also all of the above-listed boxes, as well as some other larger but not that much larger boxes still down on my desk.
I told Katie that my whole plan is that when we unpack, it will be an exciting adventure through recursion as we unpack interlocking boxes filled with boxes filled with boxes filled with boxes filled with tiny pieces of brightly colored plastic, and that every level of recursion will be its own variety of fun because all of the boxes, no matter what the size, will be clever and will contain either: a) smaller, cuter boxes, OR b) toys and/or office supplies. And everyone loves toys and office supplies and small boxes! Or at least I do, and that's what's important.
Katie was unimpressed.
This ad for the Gillette Phenom razer weirds me out a little bit...
These sports figures are so powerful and confident, they can treat the planet Earth like a sports ball!
The Gillette Phenom's vibrating blades will shave your face so smooth, that you too will be able to treat the world like a toy! The Gillette Phenom is so great, it could SHAVE THE WORLD!
The world is a booger that you can flick off of your finger!
Thanks for the lessons in setting priorities, Gillette!
My favorite political video so far.
My friend Alex made this.

What better to do on a Wednesday night than go back and edit all your old posts for spelling, grammar, and proper tags!
RFC: User-created challenges / Changingthe public posts page
There have been a bunch of requests for the ability to create a challenge or a theme, and then have people respond. Great idea. I will totally do that. Now is the time and here is the place to send me any ideas or feature requests you would have pertaining to this.
The basic idea will be that you create a category, give it a title and a description. That will go out onto the new stuff feed for people who follow you, and will also show up on some page somewhere where all the open challenges are listed. Submissions to these special categories will not show up in the main public areas, but will be otherwise available as per usual.
What else?
And while I'm noodling around in the public posts page, what else should I change there? Maybe pull the photos out into a sidebar with thumbnails instead? I am not ready to do any sort of ranking or popularity bullshit on the posts, there aren't enough people here to make anything statistically relevant.
Thoughts?

GTI FEATURE: Tags Pages!
When you click on a tag, you'll now go to a tag page instead of a 404 error! This page will *amazingly* have all of the posts tagged with that tag which were created by the author of the post that you originally clicked on. That is a mouthful. I am glad I am typing that instead of saying it out loud.
Example: all of the posts that Adam has written about himself.
You can also see a sitewide view of documents by tag.
Example: all of the posts (pics, essays, links and topics) about videogames.
You can also see a view of documents by tag and by type. I think this is neat.
Example: all of the links to stuff about Obama.
So its time to start tagging your documents well! That way we can organize ourselves in neat ways. You could see all the amazing pictures of the moon that people posted tonight. You could organize groups by tagging your topics the same thing so they all show up on one page, which you could then bookmark. Like this.
Keep it clean, people! We're talking about data integrity here! Lets not let the folksonomy get too cuh-razy.
Consumating Couples
I was at a meeting this morning at the office of one of my clients. They had another group of consultants in as well, and when I mentioned that I had created Consumating, one of the guys got all excited. After the meeting, he approached me to tell me that he had met his fiancee on Consumating! Hearing these stories makes me so happy and so proud. The site will live on! I can't wait for the first Consubaby to be born.
